Ledger security model — defense in depth

Ledger devices use a secure element (SE) combined with Ledger's BOLOS operating system. The secure element stores private keys and executes signing operations inside the chip. BOLOS provides app isolation and enforces that only approved code interacts with the key material.

Key protections

  • PIN code: Thwarts casual access if your device is lost or stolen.
  • Recovery phrase: A 24-word mnemonic used to restore your accounts on any compatible wallet.
  • Passphrase (optional): Adds an additional secret to create hidden wallets.
  • Device attestation: Ledger Live verifies device authenticity and firmware integrity.

Ledger Live — manage assets with confidence

Ledger Live is the companion app to your Ledger device. It provides a single, secure interface to:

  • View portfolio and historical balances
  • Send and receive cryptocurrencies with on-device address verification
  • Swap and exchange assets through integrated partners
  • Stake supported assets and track rewards
  • Export data for taxes or bookkeeping

Ledger Live communicates with the device for signing. Private keys never leave the secure element.

Best practices

  • Buy new from the official Ledger store or authorized sellers; avoid second-hand devices.
  • Record your recovery phrase on paper or metal — protect it physically and geographically.
  • Verify addresses on the device screen before approving transactions.
  • Keep Ledger Live and firmware up to date; follow official release notes before updating.
  • Consider using a passphrase for high-value holdings for added plausible deniability.

Frequently asked questions

What if my device is lost or stolen?
Restore your accounts on a new Ledger (or compatible) device using your 24-word recovery phrase. If you used a passphrase, you will need it to recover those hidden wallets.
Can Ledger be hacked remotely?
Because private keys remain in a secure element and signing requires physical confirmation, remote attackers cannot extract keys or sign transactions without physical access and your PIN.
Should I store the recovery phrase digitally?
No. Never store the recovery phrase on cloud storage, photos, emails, or other internet-connected systems.
